It's been a couple months since Phase One released its latest offering from the Capture One Software Series introducing Ver. 4.5.1. With promises of updated RAW formats and upgraded tethering capabilities for the USB driven SLR Systems, Phase is ushering in a new generation of digital workflow for photographers looking to use systems other than Medium Format. The system sounds great, but does it live up to the expectations and demands of the professional photographer?

Upon speaking to multiple sources and trying the software for myself mark III in hand, many questions float to the surface and hopes for the next update are eagerly anticipated. The program is still known to crash with insufficient RAM however, it is less prevalent with current platforms. Although the USB capability is present the Mark III and other Hi-Res USB systems have a lag in there upload time taking 5 to 8 seconds for each 22mpxl image to transfer from camera to computer. A Tech may find that taking an initial pre-light shot tethered then moving to card after the optimum scenario has been achieved will be the only option for working with people. With this updated, subsequently the previous Version 3.7.9 will be discontinued and a new layout and user interface weighted heavily on commands and keystrokes takes its place

In many ways this Version of Capture is a completely new program (to learn), but what it lacks in complexity it makes up for in control and versatility once you have explored all of the software's capabilities. Overall the system is solid and my personal choice for working on location. With high hopes for 4.5.2, the future of digital imaging appears to be in good hands.
